What is Vedic Meditation?
Vedic Meditation is a technique that was developed over 5,000 years ago in India. It was not designed for people whose spiritual path involves detaching from society, but rather for people who are fully engaged in life. In today’s terms, that includes multi-tasking people with hyperactive minds; people with jobs, relationships, families, hobbies and interests, cares and concerns. In a way, it was designed to benefit all of us.
How do you practice Vedic Meditation?
To practice Vedic Meditation, you sit comfortably in a chair with your back supported and your eyes closed. You allow your mind to settle down to increasingly quieter levels of consciousness by repeating a mantra. If your mind wanders, you gently steer it back to the mantra. It’s simply about always returning to your mantra.
There is no focusing, concentrating or contemplating involved – and you don’t have to control your mind in any way. The technique feels natural, simple and effortless. You don’t have to try to push thoughts away or concentrate on images. You won’t be reliant upon headphones in order to experience the deepest states of your awareness. You don’t need to visualise anything in particular. You just need to keep gently steering your mind back to your mantra.
Once you gain some experience, you may find that the time will fly by. Over time, you may well also find that you can learn to meditate almost anywhere, no matter how noisy or busy or bright your surrounds may be.
